The evolution of Pants: From ancient roots to modern style with Tondra

Pants have been an integral part of human history for centuries. From their humble beginning in ancient times to becoming a core piece in modern wardrobes, the journey of plants is fascinating.

At Tondra, we believe in honouring this history by creating stylish and comfortable pants that blend elegance with functionality.

History of pants

Pants as we know them today didn’t exist in early Vedic times. In the Rigveda the word “vastra” was used to describe garments that covered the lower body often draped or tied around the waist. These early forms of legwear were practically designed for ease of movement.

As time went on they evolved. By the time of the Maurya and Gupta period, tighter fitting pants similar to modern “shalwars” began appearing, especially among the warriors and became popular for this sleek and functional design.

While the pants for men were adapted to function properly while in combat, women’s clothing was a reflection of the cultural and social dynamics of the ancient India. Women primarily wore garments that draped around the body such as “antariya” resembling a dhoti or sari.

The modern pants revolution

The 20th century mark a significant turning point in evolution of pants, especially with the global influence of Western fashion. Pants, once seen as exclusive to men or specific to certain professions became universal accepted for both genders. In India, the arrival of British colonial influence introduced Western style trousers which soon gained popularity among the urban population.

As society modernised pants became a symbol of practicality, professionalism and freedom. Women, who traditionally worse sarees or skirts began adopting pants as part of their everyday attire particularly during the early 1900s, when the need for more functional clothing arose in response to changing roles in society.

By the mid 20th century, pants were no longer just an option for formal settings but had become a versatile fashion item for women.
